Ultimate flying disk, also known as Ultimate, is a fast-paced, dynamic team sport that combines elements of basketball, football, and soccer. Played with a flying disc (Frisbee) on a rectangular field with end zones, Ultimate emphasizes fair play, sportsmanship, and athleticism. This exciting and inclusive sport has gained significant popularity worldwide due to its accessibility, low cost, and numerous physical and mental benefits.
The origins of Ultimate can be traced back to the late 1960s at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. In 1968, Joel Silver, a high school student, devised a set of rules for a new game involving a flying disc. He named it "Frisbee Football" and played it with friends using a Wham-O Frisbee.
In 1972, the first official Ultimate tournament was held at Rutgers University. Soon after, college and university teams began forming across the United States and Canada. The National Ultimate Championship Series (NUCS) was established in 1983, and the first international tournament was held in 1986.
Ultimate is played on a rectangular field with end zones at each end. Two teams of seven players compete to advance the flying disc down the field by passing it among themselves. A player with the disc cannot run with it but can pivot or take up to five steps while holding it.
